Global container shipping force will break 20 million TEU mark

2016 global container ship fleet is expected to rise 3.4%, the lowest growth rate to a record level, but taking into account within this year net increase in fleet capacity will reach 680,000 TEU, it is expected that the global container ship fleet this year will exceed 20 million TEU mark.

BIMCO after making the prediction that in the past decade, the size of the ship container ship has grown nearly 240%. By the end of 2015, the largest container shipping force reaches 19700TEU. However, uneven growth of the fleet, which is due to ship owners prefer custom-made larger ships, as well as by a large ship operators to cut unit costs per TEU, which makes container ship development towards "bigger is better" trend.
At the same time, the number of large container ships rising further promote the growth of the fleet. From the capacity point of view, in 2007, large container ships account for only 0.5% of the global fleet size; at present, this ship has reached 18% of the global fleet. BMICO chief analyst Peter Sand responded by saying that since 2006, average annual global container ship fleet from a capacity standpoint length is 6%, while the number of terms from the average annual growth of only 3.7%. Despite the large container ships a huge increase in market share but would 8000-12000TEU-Panamax container ship still holds the largest proportion of global container shipping capacity, its capacity to reach about a quarter of the total global fleet.

In addition, over the past decade (2006-2016) and the annual growth rate over the past five container ships (2011-2016) between there are significant differences. Over the past decade, an average of less than 500TEU reduce the amount of small feeder container ship in a 4% decline in the last five years the emergence of a 1% increase, up to 5%. On the other hand, feeder ship container ship (500-999TEU) to Panamax container ship (3000TEU above) between the average growth in the past decade were active, but in the past five years, appeared in the 1% -2 % of negative growth. The same analogy is also reflected in 3000-7999TEU and 8000-12000TEU two different sizes of post-Panamax container ship, ship which 3000-7999TEU annual average increase over the past decade was 8%, while in the past decade 8000-12000TEU The average rose as high as 23%. In contrast, 12000TEU more large container ships in the past five years, the average annual capacity increase of 45%, which means that the future of container shipping market trend is still these very large ships.

Peter Sand added that over the past decade, the trend of the ship container ships come to the fore, even accelerated in the past five years. Thus, taking into account the large container ships and 8000-12000TEU-Panamax container ships coming growing, short-term container ship fleet will reach 20 million TEU over homeopathy.
